Lefteris Hasapis has been elected the new president of the Pan-Lemnian Brotherhood “Hephaestos” following a unanimous vote by the Board of directors on November 1st. Mr. Hasapis has served in this post in the past.. In addition, the new council of the women’s and young girls division “Maroula” also conducted elections voting for Malama Vasilopoulou as the new president.
The Greek community of Sydney honored the 36th anniversary of the Polytechnic Schools of Athens uprising against the military dictatorship, with the protagonistic role belonging to the community’s college students, in an event last Sunday at the Greek Orthodox Community of NSW in the suburb of Laqueba. Wreaths were laid by the students of the Greek College Associations as well as by representatives of all Greek omogeneia organizations.
The two largest Greek communities of Australia are witnessing a period of election fever. Sunday December 6th has been designated as election-day for the Greek Orthodox community of New South Wales while a few days ago, the Greek Orthodox community of Melbourne and Victoria set Sunday December 13th as the day it will carry its elections for the new Board of Directors.
The New York Times has listed “The origins of El Greco - The art of icon painting in Venetian Crete” exhibition in NY as one of the three best art exhibits this fall and dedicated a full page article in its November 20th edition. The exhibit is currently on display at the Onassis Cultural Center in Manhattan’s Olympic Tower.

French calling for Parthenon Marbles

The justifiable right for the return of the Parthenon Marbles to Greece is highlighted in an article in France’s Le Monde newspaper by author and honorary professor of Sorbonne University, Henri Godard, who calls on the Louvre Museum to set a “good example” by being the first to return to Greece pieces of the Holy Rock.
Screening of movies are continuing with unabated success within the context of the Hellenic Film Festival, organised in various Australian cities by local Greek communities.
Ten years have passed since the enthronement of the Archbishop of America, Demetrios, on September 18, 1999, at the Holy Trinity cathedral. The 10th anniversary of the event will be celebrated with a special service on Sunday, September 20 at the cathedral, officiated by the Archbishop, with the participation of other high-ranking clerics of the Greek Orthodox Church in the United States.
The new school year has commenced smoothly for Greek schools in Egypt. Meanwhile Education Coordinator Andreas Karatzas – who met with the headmasters of three schools in Cairo – noted that the number of teachers has increased significantly this year, and first-year high school students at the Ambetios School will receive personal computers from the Greek education ministry.
The exhibition "Itinerary to Mount Athos, 1928-1930" presents a selection from the 400 photographs of the travels of Swiss photographer Frédéric Boissonnas to Mount Athos in 1928 and 1930. With this exhibition, the HFC Centre in Sofia participates in the formal events dedicated to the celebration of Sofia - 130 years capital of Bulgaria.
