Σύνταξη/επιμέλεια από τον/την Μπάμπης Παπαδάκης
Research carried out by Kapa-Research and Harvard University’s Center for Hellenic Studies was presented a few days ago at a Conference on “Diaspora Hellenism” (Ypatia Hall, Ipeirou 2 and Patission, Athens). Over 15,000 Greeks around the world participated in the study, providing data on and answers regarding their immigration experience, the family, professional and economic status, standard of living and their relationship with Greece. The participants in the study took a stand on Greek foreign policy, assessed the Greek state and voiced their views on major international issues.
One of the major “wants” of expatriates highlighted in the survey was their desire to vote in parliamentary elections in Greece (80%) while expressing at the same time their disappointment over the fact that “their country remembers them only when it needs them.”
Other issues in the report included the desire of expatriates for better educational conditions for children attending schools of the Diaspora (60.5%), economic and legal facilitations in investment activities (44,6%) additional information on cultural events (22,4%).
At the same time, 69,1% expressed the view that Greece’s international position has improved due to its EU accession. Also, 34,4% noted that wished to return to live in Greece provided they were able to secure employment,.
Addressing the event were Greek Foreign Minister, Doara Backoyiannis while the report was presented by professor Antigone Lymperaki, scientific associate at Kapa Research. Also in attendance were Deputy Foreign Minister, Theodoros Kassimis, PASK MP, Andreas Loverdos and Zoe Lafis, representative of the Hellenic Studies Center at Harvard University. The event was coordinated by ERT journalist, Penelope Gavras
