Struggle and anguish for the Greek language in Australia
Σύνταξη/επιμέλεια από τον/την Νίκος Αγγελίδης
The article presents Mr. Michael Tsianika’s, professor of Greek Studies at the University of Flinders in Adelaide. Speaking of the program of Greek studies at the University of Flinders and Charles Darwin, Mr Tsianikas explained that the Greek government supports the program by paying two Greek language teachers. Without this support, the function of the programs will be difficult in the future, stated Mr. Tsianikas.

He estimated that, due to the crisis, many Greek teachers will not ask to be transferred to Australia, while the Greek government will abolish teachers’ transfer abroad, in order to save money. Mr Tsianikas appealed to the Greek communities of Darwin and Adelaide, where the previously mentioned Universities are, to help gather money to support the programs. Already, many transferred teachers are stating that due to cuts, they can’t make ends meet in Australia.
