Ancient Greek in Delphi
Γράφει ο/η Θεόφιλος Δουμάνης
02.08.08
A 12 day seminar on the language and culture of ancient Greece intended for around 60 secondary school teachers coming from all over Europe.
For the 14th year in a row, the archaeological site of Delphi hosts the
prestigious refreshment workshop, which in this edition is going to be
headed by the University of Milano. From July 31st to August 11th, its
department of Antiquity Sciences, guided by professor Giuseppe Zanetto,
is due to coordinate the lectures of all the 17 speakers, who belong to
other Italian and Greek universities. The only exception is Ewen Bowie,
who holds the chair of Classics at the English athenaeum of Oxford.
As happens every summer since 1995, the European Cultural Centre of
Delphi sets up an educational programme aimed at helping secondary
school teachers to improve their didactics, in spite of their country
of origin and its specific educational system. As a matter of fact, the
issues dealt with through meetings and debates are very varied and the
classical culture is seen as a common element for all the European
populations
In addition to more ordinary subjects like Homer, Plato and
Aristophanes, during their lectures the professors will have the chance
to present the results of their investigations concerning Greek
antiquity and the problems connected with the teaching and the
interpretation of the classics. Delphi and its cultural heritage will
be given a lot of space too, with guided tours around the ancient site
of the homonymous Panhellenic sanctuary.
