Draft bill on expatriate vote approved
Συντάχθηκε απο τον/την Μπάμπης Παπαδάκης
In a session chaired by Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis, cabinet yesterday approved a draft bill providing for Greek nationals living abroad to vote in Greek elections from their place of residence. The bill will now be tabled in parliament by Interior Minister Prokopis Pavlopoulos, who pointed out that in order to become legislation, it requires the greatest possible consensus by all political parties. The bill gives voting rights to Greeks permanently resident abroad and those that are stationed abroad, either working for Greek foreign services or as employees of international organisations. However, they will not be able to vote for candidates standing for election in Greece, but for candidates running specifically as representatives of expatriate Greeks, who will be included each party's list of state. Each party can appoint up to three such candidates on its state deputies list, and they must all be permanent residents abroad for at least 10 years.
