A concert by Suzanna and Helen Vougiouklis with music from different parts of the world will take place on July 2 & 4 organized by the HFC Centre in the framework of the parallel events of the exhibition "Light and Shadows on the Balkans".
With their enchanting voices, the sisters will enhance the mutual musical elements of the people that last through time and they will let the audience to get to know the mystery of Balkan part-singing.
The young interpreters, known to the Greek audience from their last work at the "Orient Express Train in Rouf", Athens, started to experiment with the abilities of the human voice as a music organ since they were very young. They also wanted to know the music from different parts of the world - they sing in more than 20 languages and dialects, a-capella and accompanied by the piano, the guitar and the percussion instruments: they play all these instruments themselves.
The sisters come from the multi-cultural part of Greece called Xanthi offering their audience a journey in places, cultures and people of the old times, nostalgic moments combined with a unique aesthetic pleasure of the so-called music of the world.
Suzanna and Helen Vougiouklis have a very large repertoire of songs from around the world: rebetika and traditional Greek folk songs (including songs from south Italy) Balkan songs, Portuguese fado, Spanish, Irish, French, Turkish, Arabic, American blues, jazz, gipsy music, Armenian, and more - as well as their own compositions.
Their first discography is by Legend and is entitled "Helen & Suzanna Vougiouklis". The genuine elements of tradition, remaining untouched by time and place, get transformed, and thus give the modern, contemporary expression of the diachronic. This is the way we also try to view the music of the world and our songs...
