Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney representing Astoria New York and Alexi Giannoulias, Illinois State Treasurer were the recipients of the 2008 Justice of Cyprus Award, presented at the Cyprus Federation of America Testimonial Dinner, on Saturday, October 4, at the Terrace On The Park in New York.
At the presentation of awards to Maloney and Giannoulias by the Cyprus Federation of America, Greek-Americans and Cypriot-American officials attended and spoke. The Archbishop of America, Dimitrios, described the ongoing occupation of Cyprus, after 34 years, as sad and unprecedented. He underlined that the situation did not serve anyone, not the Turkey, nor the Turkish-Cypriots.
A new, remodeled area where students of the Hellenic Classical Charetr School in Brooklyn can seek sources and help for their studies while at the same time, reinforce their knowledge through a rich collection of 10 thousand books was recently inaugurated during a special event. Honoring a special individual who contributed greatly in the founding and operation of the first charter school in New York, the school's authorities gave the new library the name "Stephen F. Kahn Memorial Library and Media Center", whose creation was made possible by a 350 thousand dollar grant from the US government.

The names of Greek students from abroad who successfully passed the Greek tertiary education entry examinations were announced yesterday by the Education ministry. The names can be viewed on the ministry's website at www.ypepth.gr by entering the candidates special code number in the corresponding box. In addition, candidates may receive information by contacting the ministry's offices during working days and hours.

Leonidas Loizides’ Theater Company honored in America for “Bacchae”

The Leonidas Loizides' Theater Company presented Euripides' "Bacchae" at the Portland High School John Ford Auditorium on September 24 within the framework of a world tour. The performance was in the Greek language with English surtitles. Director Loizides was honored by Portland Mayor Ed Suslovic for his contribution to the spread of the messages of the Greek culture through an innovative and creative approach of the ancient Greek classical masterpiece.
The next stop was the University of New Hampshire on September 25, where Pan-Macedonian Association-USA President Nina Gatzoulis presented Loizides with an honorary plaque and congratulated him for an excellent performance.
The theater company's tour was launched in New York on September 16 and will be completed on October 25 with performances in 18 states.
The production, organized by Paideia Hellenic Society, is under the auspices of the Greek ministries of foreign affairs, tourist development, transport and communications, the culture ministry Organization for the Projection of Greek Culture, the Cypriot ministries of education and culture, the City of Athens Cultural Organization, UNESCO and SAE.
