One of the world's most active schools of cinema is definitely coming from Latin America. The cinema tribute organized by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture in Athens (January 23-30) and Thessaloniki (February 7-13) is focusing on that specific film production of the recent years.
Screenings take place at Trianon Filmcenter and Micropcosmos cinema theaters in Athens and at Pavlos Zannas cinema hall in Thessaloniki. The event comes as a result of the well coordinated efforts of the Departments of Cinema and Audiovisual Media of the Culture Ministry, the embassies of Argentina, Chile, Venezuela, Brazil, Cuba, Mexico, Uruguay and Peru in Athens, and the consulates of Colombia and Panama in Piraeus. Twenty-six films coming from ten countries are featured in this double tribute in both cities, most of them being produced recently (2004-2007). The tribute includes a small sample of contemporary cinematography in Argentina, Cuba and Chile, three countries with a long tradition in cinema. Also on screen will also be movies from smaller film markets, like Peru, Uruguay and Panama. Among the films on schedule we find two productions, filmed by directors of Greek origin, from Colombia and Venezuela respectively: PVC-1 (2007) by Spyros Stathoulopoulos (screened during the two-week festival of filmmakers in Cannes in 2007, where it won the Silver Alexander Award, and in Thessaloniki Film Festival in the same year) and the short A Little Chance (2004) by Efterpi Haralambidis. Also in avant-premiere we'll see the films Silent Light by Carlos Reygadas from Mexico and The Antenna by Esteban Sapir from Argentina. The films of the tribute 1. Wops! an argentinian film (UPA!
