With the traditional ceremony of the Blessing of the Waters and diving for the Holy Cross in the bay of Spring Bayou, Epiphany was celebrated this year once again in Tarpon Springs, shortly after a service at the St. Nicholas cathedral, officiated by the Archbishop of America, Dimitrios.
Florida's "Greek city", settled by sponge divers from the Dodecanese islands in the late 19th, has been keeping the tradition alive for 98 years, unparalleled in enthusiasm and participation by any other Greek Orthodox community in the United States. The Epiphany celebrations in Tarpon Springs attract the attention of the local community, the American media and foreign visitors to the town, with some 20-30,000 people watching the event at Spring Bayou every year.
