The President of the Greek American Teachers Federation Stella Kokoli has announced the start of an open and candid dialogue with expatriate Greek organisations for the future of the Greek language and education in the United States. She was speaking to “Greek News”, after the first general assembly of the organisation, held last Saturday at the archdiocese’ cultural centre in Astoria, New York.

The candidacy of 33-year-old Alexis Giannoulias for the position of federal senator for Illinois – held until last November by US President Barack Obama – has enthused the Greek-American community. A report in the “urkish Daily News” indicates that Turkish Education Minister Huseyin Celik has promised Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew that he will establish a special commission to study the possibility of reopening the Halki Theological School which was closed in 1971.
