Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan appeared apologetic yesterday for the past persecution by Turkey of different nationalities. During a speech at a local meeting of his Justice and Development Party, he said: "For years, in this country, certain things have happened. People of different ethnic identities have been persecuted. Did we win something by this? We should think about it. But no one has sat down to think about it calmly. In reality, this was the result of fascistic attitudes". The Turkish newspaper, "Vatan", described his words as "historic self-criticism", and it also published an article about the persecution suffered by the Greeks of Constantinople. Other newspapers followed suit.
