Two of the largest Greek-Australian organisations have called on the Australian state government of Victoria to save Lonsdale Street – traditionally featuring Greek shops – in Melbourne. The Greek and Cypriot communities of Melbourne have also requested that a Greek square be created, which they propose should be called “Agora” (Market) Square. In letters to the government, ministers and the Melbourne Municipality, both the Greek and the Cypriot community presidents point out that the local authorities “owe it to the 300,000 Greeks in Victoria to make Lonsdale Street (where the community headquarters are also located) a real Greek area, a symbol of multiculturalism and an attraction for all Greeks as well as the broader Australian public”. The government has not yet responded to the request. Set as favorite Email This Σχόλια
