Two Greek-Australians - Jonathan Karapetis and Niki Vassiliki –are included in a list of 32 candidates for the title of “Australian of the Year” 2008. Forty-five-year-old Karapetis is a children’s doctor and researcher, who has conducted important studies and research on infectious diseases, and has reportedly saved thousands of Aborigines from certain death. From South Australia, 25-year-old musician Niki Vassiliki is considered one of the leading solo violinists in the world. She began playing violin for therapeutic reasons at the age of four, after she was diagnosed with ADHD. The winner of the award will be announced on January 26, Australia Day, in Canberra.
