Dr. Olga Sarantopoulos, Secretary of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE) has visited the historic villages of Fikardou and Vavatsinia in Cyprus.
Attendants of the 16th Worldwide Conference of Oversea Cypriots, bid farewell to the Director of the Cyprus foreign ministry Division of Overseas and Repatriated Cypriots Ambassador Charalambos Ioannidis, who has taken up this position after a long and dedicated course of support towards the Diaspora, by means of a modest event.
The Council for Hellenes Abroad, SAE Oceania, announced during a special event the organization of the Pan-Hellenic Sports and Cultural Games of Oceania, to be held in November in Melbourne.
The 2nd consecutive open gathering of the omogeneia was organized by SAE Oceania. Last week’s meeting took place in Melbourne, followed by Sydney and will include more meetings in other cities throughout September.
The Federation of Greek Orthodox communities of Australia announced that it had handed over to the relevant authorities and bodies the sum of $50, 863 which had been collected during various drives and fund raisers following initiatives of the Federation and its community-members, for the assistance of victims of the February 7th catastrophic fires in Victoria State.

Grief for the raging fires in Greece

Leaders of the Diaspora expressed their deep sorrow for the devastating fires in Greece and for the people who have been affected by them. “It was another terrible tragedy for our country” stated the Archbishop of America, Demetrius about the fires in Greece, by emphasizing on the fact that “the Diaspora is also in deep sorrow along with the entire Hellenism for this great disaster”. The President of the Greek Council of America, Manolis Velivassakis mentioned that “My feelings towards this situation are sorrowful and bitter, because for another year Greece is on Fire. At last, all responsible parties must sit on the same table and consider the future of the country and how the forests and the natural environment of our homeland can be protected”.
