Newly elected Greek-Australian senator Nick Xenophon has given his maiden speech at the Australian Federal Senate, outlining his ideological preferences and positions in relation to key issues in Australian society.
As expected, the South Australian senator spoke at length about his fight against poker machines and gambling in general, stressing that he hopes for a close and constructive cooperation with Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, his government and all political forces to eliminate this phenomenon. He also touched on management of water resources from the Murray River, with emphasis on the proper and equal distribution for his state.
