Oscar-winning actress Olympia Dukakis inaugurated this year’s celebrations for the 135th anniversary of The American College of Greece with a moving lecture titled “A Woman’s Story: a conversation with Olympia Dukakis”.The lecture was delivered to an audience of over 350 people, at the College’s John S. Bailey Library. A British Court of Appeal ruled on Tuesday that a decision by a Cypriot court, in connection with claims relating to Greek Cypriot owned property in Cyprus’ northern Turkish occupied areas, must be executed. The British Court’s decision was issued in the case of Apostolides v Orams, in which Greek Cypriot Meletis Apostolides took the Orams couple to court, claiming his property rights over his property in the occupied areas where the Orams had built, illegally, their holiday home.

Οι νέοι ηλικίας 18-25 ετών προέρχονται από χώρες του νοτίου ημισφαιρίου (Νότιο Αμερική, Νότιο Αφρική, Αυστραλία και Ν.Ζηλανδία), και φιλοξενούνται στην Ελλάδα από τη Γενική Γραμματεία Απόδημου Ελληνισμού, στο πλαίσιο του Προγράμματος ‘Ελληνική Γλώσσα και Πολιτισμός’.
"Είστε μια άλλη Ελλάδα", τόνισε ο Κ. Παπούλιας μιλώντας στους νέους και πρόσθεσε ότι "σας σκεπτόμαστε πάρα πολύ, γιατί ο ελληνισμός έξω από τα σύνορα της Ελλάδος είναι ένας πολύ δυναμικός ελληνισμός και αυτός ο ελληνισμός έχει κερδίσει και την εκτίμηση και τον θαυμασμό των χωρών που βρίσκονται, εργάζονται και διαπρέπουν οι Έλληνες".
Ο Πρόεδρος "παρακάλεσε" τους νέους της ελληνικής διασποράς "να μαθαίνουν καλά την ελληνική γλώσσα: Να αφιερώνετε πολλές ώρες για να τη μάθετε καλά. Γιατί είναι μια πολύ καλή γλώσσα. Όλες οι ξένες γλώσσες έχουν δανειστεί πάρα πολλές λέξεις από την ελληνική γλώσσα. Και με αυτή τη γλώσσα μίλησαν και φιλόσοφοι και συγγραφείς και ιστορικοί, όχι μονάχα στην Αρχαιότητα και στο Βυζάντιο, αλλά αν σκεφτείτε ότι μια μικρή χώρα έχει πάρει Νόμπελ Λογοτεχνίας, πάει να πει ότι αυτή η γλώσσα είναι πολύ δυνατή".
Ο Κάρολος Παπούλιας εξήγησε ότι οι μεγάλοι έλληνες λογοτέχνες, Ελύτης, Σεφέρης, Καβάφης, Ρίτσος, Καζαντζάκης είναι μερικά από τα ονόματα που τιμά η διεθνής κοινότητα και τους διαβάζει ακόμα.
"Και θέλω αυτούς τους μεγάλους λογοτέχνες και ποιητές να τους διαβάζετε στο πρωτότυπο και όχι στη μετάφραση. Και θέλω το ‘Χριστός Ανέστη’ να το ψέλνετε στα ελληνικά", πρόσθεσε.
Ο Κάρολος Παπούλιας ζήτησε από τους έλληνες της διασποράς "να μην ξεχνούν" την πατρίδα και τόνισε:
"Ο ελληνισμός είναι μια ιδέα. Είναι μια φωτεινή ιδέα και αυτήν ακολουθούμε όλοι. Η πατρίδα μας είναι μικρή πατρίδα, αλλά είναι κι αυτή πολύ ωραία. Και δεν είναι μονάχα οι θάλασσες και τα νησιά, είναι και τα βουνά της δικιάς μου πατρίδας, γιατί εγώ είμαι ορεινός. Και κάποτε θα πάμε όλοι μαζί και στη δικιά μου πατρίδα, στην Ήπειρο, να τη γνωρίσετε. Σας εύχομαι όλα τα καλά. Μην μας ξεχνάτε, όπως και εμείς δεν σας ξεχνάμε. Να είστε πρώτοι σε ό,τι κάνετε, γιατί πάντοτε οι Έλληνες υπήρξαν πρωτοπόροι".
