The Austrian translator of the “Iliad”, Raoul Schrott, has pointed to Adana as Homer’s place of origin, maintaining that the epic poet was a hostage in the court of the Assyrians.
There, according to Schrott, he wrote his two masterpieces, the “Iliad” and the “Odyssey”. This is what the well known Austrian poet and historian has written in the prologue of his new translation of the epic poem, which will be published in March in Germany. In collaboration with the Assyrian expert, Robert Rollinger, he claims that the region – now in southeastern Turkey – exactly matches the Homeric descriptions. According to Schrott, Homer was the offspring of Greek settlers in the ancient region, which was then under Assyrian domination. His theory, he claims, solves not only the mystery of the origins of Homer and his works, but also the enigma of his name. Set as favorite Email This Σχόλια
