Archbishop Christodoulos passes away |

The Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, Christodoulos, died early this morning at his home in Athens, after being diagnosed and treated for cancer of the liver. This afternoon, his body will be transferred to the Athens Cathedral, where it will lie in state for three days.
His funeral - which will be declared a public holiday - will be held will all official state honours. Archbishop Christodoulos Paraskevaidis was born in Xanthi in 1939. He studied Law, spoke four languages and was a lecturer in Theology. Elected Church leader in 1998, Christodoulos received the late Pope John Paul II in 2001 in the first visit by a pontiff to the Orthodox country in nearly 1,300 years. Christodoulos followed up last year with a historic visit to the Vatican, where he met Pope Benedict XVI. During his hospitalisation, Christodoulos received daily visits from Greece's political leadership and public figures, including Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis, the President of the Greek Republic, Karolos Papoulias, the country's former King Constantine II and the Constantinople-based Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, spiritual leader of the world's Orthodox Christians.
