The Greek ambassador to the United States, Alexandros Mallias, recently gave an interview to journalist Giorgos Bistis for the Voice of America, on the name dispute with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM).
Mallias said that instead of maturing and following 21st century
policies and practices, FYROM was taking large steps backwards,
observing 19th century policies. The ambassador also referred to a map of the so-called “Great Macedonia”, at which the prime minister of FYROM had laid a wreath several days ago. Mallas noted that the map included the whole of Greek Macedonia and Halkidiki, asking whether that was the political act of a country which aspired to become a member of NATO in a few days. The Greek ambassador reiterated Greece’s position on the name issue, stating that it must be mutually acceptable name for the former Yugoslav republic, which would be uniformly used internationally.
