Deep mourning and grief have brought the Greek- and Turkish-Cypriot communities in Melbourne closer, after four young men – the victims of a traffic accident on one of the Australian city’s motorways – were buried earlier this week.
The two
18-year-old Turkish-Cypriots, who had an Islamic funeral, were Hasan
Burke and Salih Niyazi, while the two 17-year-old Greek-Cypriots were
Panagiotis Stavrou and George Loizou. Hundreds of people attended the
latter’s funeral, held at the Greek Orthodox church of Panagia Soumela
in the suburb of East Keilor, including many of their fellow students. The Australian media gave extensive coverage to the funerals, noting in all reports that the four young men had proved during their short life than Greek- and Turkish-Cypriots can co-exist and can be friends. “This is the message sent by this tragedy and it should reach as far as our common homeland, Cyprus,” pointed out the former Federal MP, Andreas Theofanous, who is of Greek-Cypriot origin.
