Greek shipowners have topped the 2007 list in purchases of new vessels. Last year, they increased their already substantial share of ship purchases, with 273 dry cargo ships (a total value of $11.7 billion), 112 tankers ($4.2 billion) 38 containerships ($0.813 billion) and 22 other types of vessels ($0.135 billion), compared to 296 vessels bought in 2006 – a total investment of $8.8 billion. In relation to orders for newbuildings, according to November data collected by the shipbrokers, George Moundreas, Greek shipowners have proceeded with a total of orders for 522 ships of all types, with an overall value of $30 billion.
