Struggle for re-opening of Halki Seminary

Kalamata – Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew yesterday met for 45 minutes with the Greek Foreign Undersecretary, Spyros Kouvellis, in Kalamata, to discuss the difficulties faced by the Patriarchate in the recognition of its ecumenical nature, as well as the various restrictions placed on the Greek-Orthodox Halki Seminary in Turkey.
They met on the sidelines of the International Symposium on “environmental protection as the source of true life and as a precondition for sustainable development”.
Earlier, Patriarch Bartholomew was made an honorary citizen of Kalamata, by unanimous decision of the city's Municipal Council, during a ceremony at the City Hall that was attended by Kouvelis, and the city's and prefecture's officials. The Ecumenical Patriarch also visited the Holy Metropolitan Church of Messinia and was present at the feast for the Commemoration of the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple.
