The exhibition ‘Tribute to the Greek Resistance, 1940-1944' will be presented in Memorial Leclerc - Museum Jean Moulin in Paris (October 1 - November 2 2008). The exhibition is organized by the Hellenic Foundation for Culture and the National Gallery - Museum Alexandros Soutzos.
The tribute is conducted under the aegis of the Greek Embassy in Paris. These works of art are presented to the French public for the very first time. These works of art were assembled after Milliex couple's initiative. In 1945, Roger Milliex (1913-2006), scholar, writer and former director of the French Institute in Athens and his spouse, writer Tatiana Gritsi-Milliex (1920-2005) had asked French intellectuals and artists for an honorary donation to the Greek people and their heroic resistance during World War II, 1940-1944. The donation of the French artists includes thirty paintings, six drawings, six engravings, four sculptures and two albums of engravings. All the above now belong to the collection of Western European Art of the National Gallery of Athens and were exhibited for the first time in Athens's French Institute in 1949. Moreover, one hundred and ten manuscripts and typescripts of French intellectuals and members of resistance groups, now kept at the Hellenic Literary and Historical Archive (E.L.I.A.), complete the donation. The donation was presented for the first time in the National Gallery of Athens - Museum Alexandros Soutzos in 1980. Important artists of the 20th century like Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Pierre Bonnard, André Masson, Francis Picabia and Raoul Dufy are some of the generous donors of this collection. Paul Claudel, Georges Bernanos, Le Corbusier and Jean-Paul Sartre are amongst the authors who praised the Greeks through their texts. The donation of the French artists was presented again in 2003 in the Municipal Art Gallery of Patras. In the following years, it was housed in the Macedonian Museum of Modern Art in Thessalonica and in the branch of the National Gallery of Athens in Corfu. In June 2007, the National Gallery of Athens, participating in the celebration of one hundred years since the foundation of the French Institute, presented once-again the complete donation in Athens, dedicating the exhibition to the memory of the couple Roger and Tatiana Milliex. The present exhibition is hosted in the Memorial for Leclerc de Hautecloque and for the release of Paris - Museum Jean Moulin. Marshal Leclerc was active by the side of the general De Gaulle, while Jean Moulin was one of the most important figures of the French resistance. The exhibition, thus, acquires particular interest, as the works of art and the texts of the donation to the Greek people correspond to the historical frame of France at the same period of time.
