In a newspaper interview, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew has referred to Greek-Turkish relations, Ankara's European Union aspirations and the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Constantinople. The Patriarch stressed that he is working to the fullest extent to promote Greek-Turkish relations, adding that he is always praying for their further improvement.
Answering a question about Ankara's aim to join the EU, he expressed the view that Turkey's place is in Europe, in the large European family. Positive steps have been taken, he noted, and voiced the hope that more will follow. "Non-accession will not benefit Turkey, nor Europe," he said.
