South Australian premier Mike Rann has sparked an international diplomatic furore by accusing the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) of stealing Greek culture and its leader, Gjorge Ivanov, of “stirring up trouble in the most dangerous way”. He made the comments in a speech at the Dimitria Greek festival in Adelaide.
The international promotion of Greece through the organization of the Classical Marathon was proposed by Deputy Foreign Minister, Dimitris Droutsas in an interview to ERA 5 radio. Speaking on the program “Opou gis kai Patris” Droutsas called on the members of the Omogeneia to assist in making the Marathon gain an international profile, as it celebrates 2,500 years from the battle at Marathon.

Athens Mayor Nikitas Kaklamanis heading a City of Athens delegation in Alexandria, Egypt, met with the Patriarch of Alexandria, Theodoros. The visit to Egypt will take place from Tuesday, February 9, through Thursday, February 11, on the invitation of Alexandria Governor, General Adel Labib. The delegation is visiting the Egyptian city in order to attend a ceremony in which Sharm El Sheikh Street will be renamed Constantine P Cavafy Street.
Roger Wilkins, the special advisor to Australian prime minister, Kevin Rudd, is one of the five world experts to be appointed by Prime Minister George Papandreou to be part of the Committee for the Modernizing of the Government. In addition to Mr. Wilkins, also appointed were:- Kevin Featherstone, Professor of Contemporary Greek Studies at the Hellenic Observatory of LSE.

Τον αποχαιρετούν πλήθος φίλων του, γιατί ο Κώστας Αξελός έδινε στη φιλία ειδικό νόημα και μεγάλη βαρύτητα, αλλά και πολλοί άλλοι που εξεδήλωσαν ήδη την επιθυμία να βρίσκονται εκεί τη στιγμή εκείνη: νέοι και λιγότερο νέοι, θαυμαστές της σκέψης και του έργου του, θαυμαστές της συνέπειας και της ακεραιότητας που τον χαρακτήρισαν σε όλη τη ζωή του, χωρίς καμιά παρέκκλιση. Δύο καθηγητές της φιλοσοφίας και στενοί του φίλοι, ο Ζαν Λωξερουά και ο Κλωντ Ρελς, θα μιλήσουν για τον άνθρωπο και το έργο του. Θα ακολουθήσει η ανάγνωση (του αρχαιοελληνικού πρωτοτύπου και της γαλλικής μετάφρασης) του περίφημου στάσιμου από την Αντιγόνη, όπου γίνεται αναφορά στα κατορθώματα του ανθρώπου που μόνο απ’ τον Αδη δεν μπορεί να ξεφύγει, η ανάγνωση ενός ποιήματος του Φρήντριχ Χαίλντερλιν και η ανάγνωση ενός αποσπάσματος από το τελευταίο βιβλίο του Κώστα Αξελού, που αναφέρεται «σ’ αυτό που δεν μας εγκαταλείπει».Ένας φλαουτίστας θα τον συνοδεύσει με μουσική του Μότζαρτ καθώς θα κατεβαίνει στη γη. Αργότερα, στο ιστορικό καφέ «Σελέκτ» του οποίου ο Κώστας Αξελός υπήρξε τακτικός θαμών, εκεί όπου συνήθιζε να συναντάει φίλους και άλλους, θα τηρηθεί το ελληνικό έθιμο: με καφέ, με μπισκότα, με ποτά.
