    Lefteris Hasapis has been elected the new president of the Pan-Lemnian Brotherhood “Hephaestos” following a unanimous vote by the  Board of directors on November 1st. Mr. Hasapis has served in this post in the past.. In addition, the new council of the women’s and young girls division “Maroula” also conducted elections voting for Malama Vasilopoulou as the new president.

    The Greek community of Sydney honored the 36th anniversary of the Polytechnic Schools of Athens uprising against the military dictatorship, with the protagonistic role belonging to the community’s college students, in an event last Sunday at the Greek Orthodox Community of NSW in the suburb of Laqueba.  Wreaths were laid by the students of the Greek College Associations as well as by representatives of all Greek omogeneia organizations.

    The two largest Greek communities of Australia are witnessing a period of election fever. Sunday December 6th has been designated as election-day for the Greek Orthodox community of New South Wales while a few days ago, the Greek Orthodox community of Melbourne and Victoria set Sunday December 13th as the day it will carry its elections for the new Board of Directors.

    The New York Times has listed “The origins of El Greco - The art of icon painting in Venetian Crete” exhibition in NY as one of the three best art exhibits this fall and dedicated a full page article in its November 20th edition. Theodorakis film for Canberra screening

Next Sunday, the Greek Club of Canberra will screen a documentary about world renowned Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis in the hall of its premises. The producer of the movie is Perth-based Greek-Australian Eleni Evangelinou, who – apart from her lengthy on-camera interview with Theodorakis – has had access to some rare objects from his personal archive.

SAE Oceania announces organization of Pan-Hellenic Games

The 2nd consecutive open gathering of the omogeneia was organized by SAE Oceania. Last week’s meeting took place in Melbourne, followed by Sydney and will include more meetings in other cities throughout September.
