More than 200 Cypriots of the Diaspora, from all continents, are taking part in the 16th Worldwide Conference of Overseas Cypriots (PSEKA – POMAK) which commenced tonight at Nicosia. The official opening ceremony was announced by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Dimitris Christophias, who emphasized on the fact that the Cypriot Government is considering all matters of Overseas Cypriots a priority. Regarding the matter of Turkish-Occupated Cyprus, the President of the Republic of Cyprus made it clear that a viable solution is sought, which will eventually lead to the union of the grounds, the people, the values and also the economy of Cyprus within the framework of a bizonal, bi-communal federation.
Mr. Christophias also expressed his warm gratitude towards the Greek Government, Politicians and the people of Greece for their constant support and solidarity that they offer to the Cypriot efforts for justice, by stating that specifically after the Meeting of the National Board, on the forthcoming September, the Cypriot and Greek governments will “synchronize their steps even further for more action”. “If Turkey wants a solution by December, they must change their stance. They must end the occupation and settlement and acknowledge the rights of all Cypriots, both Greek-Cypriots and Turkish-Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians and Latins. Turkey’s allies and friends in a European and international level, must indicate its tactical moves, instead of covering them, even the threats which are being made towards the Cypriot Government. Those who have begun to put pressure on the Greek-Cypriot side must be halted. They must forget about this. Pressure should be excercised elsewhere. Not to us” Stated Mr. Christophias. He also stated that if the Turkish-Cypriot side and Turkey, agree on a solution of the situation, based on what we agreed on, the Greek-Cypriot side is ready to follow even before December. “If not” he emphasized, “then we are not going to accept a settlement for the sake of settling things, so as to serve the interests and goals of Turkey or its friends, whoever they may be.”
