Foreign minister Dora Bakoyanni has discussed her reservations about Kosovo's expected declaration of independence from Serbia with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Bakoyanni said later the breakaway must not become a model for other restive areas. Greece has expressed misgivings that the recognition of Kosovo's independence by other European countries and the United States, expected within days, could set a precedent for secessionists in other parts of the world, including Turkish-occupied Cyprus. The United States also is pressing for Greece and neighboring Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia to resolve a dispute ahead of a NATO summit meeting in April. If unresolved, the name dispute threatens to derail that former Yugoslav republic's bid to join NATO. Rice has reportedly told FYROM Foreign Minister Antonio Milososki that U.N. mediation processes should be used to find a solution and was expected to tell Bakoyanni the same.
