A call for the greatest participation ever and support to all the omogeneia bodies for the April 6th Greek Independence Day Parade on Fifth Avenue and all the related parallel events was made by Parade Committee officials during the weekly council meeting.
As it has been announced, Grand Marshall's of this year's parade will be the president of the Hellenic Parliament, Dimitris Sioufas, the Greek Benevolent society via Georgia Skiadas and entrepreneur, Dean Mitropoulos. The responsible parties of the various committee's briefed participants of the preparations underway with specific reference to the receptions to be held at "Terrace on the Park" on April 4th at the Manhattan Hilton on April 5th as well as the promotion required for the parade raffle. The Federation's president, Nikos Dimantides, announced the participation of the Greek Presidential Guard (Evzones) at the "Terrace on the Park" reception, who will perform traditional dances, while he also reiterated the attendance of the Greek Air Force's Philharmonic orchestra at the parade. On Tuesday, March 25th, Greek Independence Day, a radio-thon was held by Nikos Folias of "Hellas FM" for the economic support of the parade, which so far boasts the participation of 39 floats. During the reception at the Manhattan Hilton, the "Independence Awards" will be handed out. During the meeting also discussed were the various parallel events that will be held in honor of Greek Independence Day including: a reception by Brooklyn Borough President, Marty Markowitz at The Grand Rotunda at Brooklyn Borough Hall at 6pm, a reception on the same day hosted by Mayor Michael Bloomberg at Gracie Mansion, a Classical Music Concert with the Astoria Symphony, at the Stathakion Center in Astoria on Sunday March 30th, on Wednesday, April 2nd, Manhattan Benefit reception at Kellari restaurant in New York, on Firday April 4th at 12 noon, Flag raising ceremony at Bowling Green in downtown Manhattan and on Saturday April 5th, the unveiling of the statue of Aristotle at Athens Square in Astoria at 1PM.
