The candidacy of 33-year-old Alexis Giannoulias for the position of federal senator for Illinois – held until last November by US President Barack Obama – has enthused the Greek-American community. Last week, Giannoulias visited New York for appearances at events to financially aid his pre-election campaign.
A report in the “urkish Daily News” indicates that Turkish Education Minister Huseyin Celik has promised Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew that he will establish a special commission to study the possibility of reopening the Halki Theological School which was closed in 1971.
Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew is due to arrive in New Orleans on October 20 to begin a visit to the United States, the purpose of which is to convene and preside over the 8th Religion, Science and the Environment (RSE) Symposium, and to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the enthronement of Archbishop Demetrios of America as the Primate of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.

The President of the Cyprus Republic, Dimitris Christofias congratulated the Cyprus Fedration of America over their decision to honor a simple and humble citizen, who expresses and represents traditional Cyprus, Hambis Nikolaou, a man of dignity and hospitality. A man the president himself characterized as “his second father” while he also noted that the doors of the presidential mansion had always been open for Nikolaou during all the administrations from president Kyprianou to the present day. Greece’s Ambassador to Washington, Vasilis Kaskarelis spoke about the significant role played by Greek-Cypriots in the US, with their patriotism in all the critical issues for Cyprus and Greece while characterizing Hambis Nikoloau the personification of dedication in the struggle for Cyprus. Nikolaou migrated ot the US in 1970, worked very hard garnering a substantial amount of money. At the same time, Nikoalou remained simple, humble always helping people around him. 79 year old Nikoalou characterized the special event in his honor a milestone in his life.
