A lavish event celebrating Greece's March 25th national holiday was held in Sydney on Sunday, organised by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia.
Thousands of Greek-Australians took advantage of the fine, sunny weather to watch the parade of schoolchildren and the representatives of expatriate Greek organisations, followed by speeches and a cultural program presented at the Opera House. Following a speech by the Archbishop of Australia, Stylianos, representatives from the Greek and Cypriot governments referred to the uprising of the people, which led to the formation of the modern Greek state. On their part, Australian officials supported the common struggles of the two countries for liberation, democracy and peace, and praised the Greek community for its important contribution to progress in Australia.
