Greek shipowners have invested some $15.3 billion in the second-hand ship market in the past 11 months of 2007. More specifically, the Greek maritime community is playing a leading role in this market, with a share of 35.6 percent of the $42.9 billion invested so far this year. Overall, 405 vessels have passed into “Greek hands” of the 1,650 that have been sold this year to date. Trailing the Greek shipowners are the Norwegians with 100 purchases worth $2.3 billion. The Koreans have invested the same amount for the purchase of 77 second hand ships, while Chinese shipowners have bought 99 vessles for a total worth of $2.23 billion.
