Greek expatriate archaeologist, Victor Sarigiannidis is one of the personalities to be honoured this year by the Athens Academy for his writing of the book, “Necropolis of Gonur”, published by Kapon. In it, he presents his conclusions from 30 years of excavations in the Gonur desert, in today’s Turkmenistan. Also honoured was Vassiliki Lambidou (known as the Lady of Marasia) for her long and voluntary contribution to her country and young conscripts who serve on the Evros border. Born in 1904 in Eastern Thrace, she settled in Marasia in 1962 in the last house next to the town’s border guard post. Not only did she offer comfort and practical assistance to young Greek soldiers serving there, but she also religiously raised and lowered the Greek flag, despite her 103 years.
