According to an order given by Russian president Vladimir Putin, the Pushkin medal is being awarded to three Greeks: the former foreign minister and current president of the Karamanlis Foundation, Petros Molyviatis, writer and translator of Russian literature Mitsos Alexandropoulos, and deputy Simos Kedikoglou, the president of the parliamentary committee for Hellenic-Russian friendship.
The medal - named after Russia's national poet - is being presented to the three Greeks and another nine foreign nationals for "their major contribution to the dissemination and study of the Russian language, the preservation of cultural heritage, and the mutual enrichment of the culture of our nations and our peoples". Two thousand and seven was the "Year of the Russian Language" and during Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis' visit to Moscow, President Putin had thanked the Greeks and the Greek government for their support in developing interest in the Russian language.
