A former community leader from the Chania prefecture – with the help of his nephew – may be the future heir of an enormous fortune. Antonis Sbirakis was surprised to learn that he could be one of the beneficiaries, whom the New York Life Insurance Company is looking for.
The US company announced a program to compensate the heirs of 1,031
life insurance policies issued to Greece in the Ottoman Empire before
1915. The company plans to publish notices in American and
international newspapers setting out the procedures for the submission
of applications by those who believe they may be eligible. Sbirakis believes he is closely related to Nikolas Sbirakis – one of the names included in the American insurance company’s list – as the name exists only in the village of Asi Gonias on the island of Crete.
