“At the last minute, I decided to follow my heart and study Classical Philology, instead of something ‘useful’”, says young Hellenist scholar Elena Gonzales. “And I never regretted it”. Today, she is writing her thesis on Homeric and classical elements in Kazantzakis’ “Odyssey”. She belongs to a new batch of foreign philologists, who – for various reasons – have been fascinated with Greece and have decided to devote their scientific work to it. In fact, some have become members of the International Society of Friends of Nikos Kazantzakis, the only such Greek society with so many global members that it had to create 30 new branches. Now, Elena Gonzales lives in Spain, but she continues to visit Greece frequently and says it is unlikely that “this habit will be broken”.
